In addition to grant funding, the Mathile Family Foundation offers opportunities for nonprofit organizations to increase their capacity through professional development.

Inspired by Clay Mathile’s success with the Iams Company, the Mathile Family Foundation believes that just as in for-profit businesses, the diligent practice of professional management strengthens nonprofit organizations and deepens their impact. The mission of our capacity building programs is to inspire and equip leaders of nonprofit organizations to implement the principles of professional management.

In 2021 the Mathile Family Foundation began offering the two-day Course for Nonprofit Leaders. The Course introduces participants to the DOC Model developed by Aileron and taught in its Course for Presidents. It is based on principles Clay Mathile practiced when he owned the Iams company.

As of November 2025, 319 individuals representing 119 nonprofit organizations have attended the Course for Nonprofit Leaders.

In 2026, the Course for Nonprofit Leaders will take place on

  • January 20-21 (registration closed – this session is full)
  • May 19-20
  • August 12-13
  • November (tbd)

Following completion of the Course, alumni of the Course for Nonprofit Leaders are invited to continue to explore professional management in day-long deeper dives addressing fundraising, board/governance, emotional intelligence, strategic planning, crisis management, business systems, culture/people development, and more. Executive Directors also receive 3 hours of leadership coaching.
